US pension plan funded status improves but market volatility remains a concern in avoiding funding erosion in 2010

US plan sponsors have seen a significant improvement in the funded status of their pension plans over the last 12 months, says Mercer in a statement. "However, there is a risk that these gains could easily be eroded if market volatility returns, unless the organisational architecture around decision making is improved so that asset allocation changes can be implemented more rapidly and efficiently."   Mercer's latest figures for the end of December show an improvement in funded status to 85% (deficit of $229 billion).
