The investors’ flight to quality, one of the main outcomes of the recent events in the financial markets, has raised the stakes for the asset management sector and become a driver for reform of the sector. The global crisis has underlined the need for asset managers to focus on their strengths. The temptation to offer as broad an offering as potential clients might want is now tempered by the much more important requirement to be able to offer in-depth expertise, backed up by a good track record.
The old marketing buzz phrase of the bull market years, ‘covering the waterfront’, was all about building as many revenue streams as possible, ironically just what is most needed in these more straitened years of a bear market.
