Whichever of the 32-teams competing in this year’s soccer World Cup goes on to lift the famous trophy one thing is for sure, they won’t be the only winners. The boost which South Africa’s economy will receive from hosting the self-proclaimed ‘greatest show on earth’ is likely to be felt for decades to come.
The event itself lasts just 31 days but the country has been preparing for the event for four years.
It is the first time the competition has been held on African soil and it was a controversial choice when it was first announced amid safety fears and concerns that the country’s infrastructure and football stadia were not fit for purpose.
