Whenever there is an economic storm investors run for cover. In the case of the recent global financial crisis the safe haven for many was viewed as multi-asset investing, particularly in the UK and Europe.
Multi-asset investing is not a new phenomenon – far from it - but it has undergone an evolution in recent years and has moved beyond the traditional balanced mandate, adopting a more sophisticated approach.
A recent report from Cerulli Associates titled ‘European multi-asset investment strategies’ estimates that total assets invested using a multi-asset approach stands at $1.2 billion as of 2009.
The widely used definition of multi-asset investment is any fund that invests in two or more asset classes. The rule of thumb is that the broader the mix of assets, the more diversified it should be and investments include private equity, property, hedge funds, commodities, currencies and aboslute return strategies.
