Today the levels of asset under management in the industry, especially in Europe, have returned to 2007 levels. This is mainly due to market performance. Net flows within the industry remain close to zero.
The problem here is not with institutional investors, who are providing positive net flows, but with retail investors, whose flows are at an all-time low.
Retail investors who bought equities ten years ago look at their cumulative returns today and see that they are virtually nil. In addition, they have lost trust in financial institutions, and asset managers are seen as part of that group. The result is that assets have become considerably more focused on the leading performers in the sector.
