BNY Mellon has announced key changes to its leadership team in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and wider Middle East & Africa region.

Tarek Sherlala has been appointed senior executive officer, Dubai branch. An authorised person under the Dubai Financial Services Authority, he will lead on business strategy for the branch and oversee compliance of BNY Mellon’s activities within the Dubai International Financial Centre. 

Sherlala will also continue as the company’s head of asset servicing business in the Middle East & Africa region. He has been with the firm for almost 10 years and has held senior positions in the Middle East and the US.

Rajai Ayyash has been appointed regional executive for the Gulf region and will work alongside Sherlala. For the past 10 years, Ayyash has been country executive for the UAE, Kuwait and Oman, and since early 2014 has also held overall responsibility for Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain.

The leadership changes follows the retirement of Tarek Elrefai, who has been senior executive officer, Dubai branch and head of client management for the Middle East & Africa region for the past five years. Elrefai’s career with BNY Mellon spans 25 years, during which time he has held a number of key roles based across the Middle East.

The remodeled senior regional team includes the following executives:

  • Imad Abukhlal continues as head of Middle East & Africa of BNY Mellon Investment Management Emea.
     
  • Giambattista Atzeni, holds the newly created role leading BNY Mellon International Wealth Management’s activities in the region.
     
  • Brian Hoey has taken over as head of sales and relationship management for corporate trust.
     
  • Clive Robinson has relocated to Dubai from the Netherlands with a brief to develop Asset Servicing business across the Middle East, with a particular focus on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
     
  • Bana Akkad Azhari is head of relationship management for the Middle East & North Africa, Turkey and the Commonwealth of Independent States region for BNY Mellon’s Treasury Services business.
