The director-general of Finland’s financial supervisory authority, Anneli Tuominen, has been named as vice chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).

Tuominen, already an established ESMA board member, replaces Carlos Tavares and will remain in charge of FIN-FSA, Finland’s banking and securities watchdog.

She will also continue her role as a voting member of the supervisory board of the single supervisory Mechanism (SSM), the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA).

ESMA is an independent EU regulator that plays a key role in implementing the bloc’s financial laws, enhancing investor protection and promoting stable and orderly markets.

Steven Maijoor, ESMA chair, said Tuominen has “demonstrated her commitment” to supporting ESMA in the pursuit of its goals.

“I look forward to working with her,” he added.
