Industry veteran Roy Zimmerhansl is to join HSBC Securities Services (HSS) as global head of securities lending as of March 1.

The bank’s securities lending team will be restructured as a result of his move. The current global head of securities lending, Wayne Burlingham, will report to Zimmerhansl as head of securities product management. Nick Thomas who is currently global head of secpialised sales will also report to Zimmerhansl as head of securities lending sales.

In an internal memo, John van Verre, head of global custody and treasury services, said: “In this new role, Roy will lead the area as HSBC increases its investment in the client securities lending business in response to increased client demand and in recognition that an enhanced securities lending capability is integral to the growth of the global custody business.”

He added that Zimmerhansl’s experience and knowledge of the business will be instrumental in achieving its strategic objective to develop a “leading client proposition”. Zimmerhansl will report to Van Verre from London.

Zimmerhansl has worked in the securities lending business for many years, with key roles at Nomura, Rabobank, Deutsche Bank and ICAP. He is a regular speaker on panels at industry conferences. He has also worked for some of the major Canadian banks including CIBC, Royal Bank of Canada, and Canadian Depository for Securities Limited where he began his career.

He left ICAP in October 2008 where he had been head of electronic securities lending, and that same year set up his own consulting service. He also owns FinTuition which provides training services to the securities finance business. He has also been a product specialist for Trading Apps since 2011.
