CME sells Aurora data centre for $130m
US futures exchange operator CME Group has sold its 428,000 sq ft data centre in Aurora, Illinois to tech firm CyrusOne for $130m.
Chicago-based CME said it would lease back the space for 15 years and continue to run its electronic trading platform on the premises.
The warehouse contains CME’s trading match engines, which provide connectivity for products traded on the CME Globex - the first global electronic futures trading platform.
CME closed its open-outcry futures pits in Chicago and New York last July. Electronic trading now makes up the bulk of its clearing and transaction fee revenue.
The Aurora data centre contains an electrical substation with enough power for 100,000 homes, according the CME website.
"This transaction allows us to focus our resources on what we do best - running our exchanges, providing global risk management and offering a broad range of technology services,” said CME’s chief financial officer John Pietrowicz.
CyrusOne runs 33 data centers across US, Europe, and Asia.
